Story: The Royal Exchange was originally founded by Sir Thomas Gresham in 1566 to supplant the Bourse at Antwerp as the chief European market-place and has twice been destroyed by fire but on both occasions was rebuilt on the same site. Sir William Tite designed the current Royal Exchange which was opened by Queen Victoria in 1844. The steps leading up to the Corinthian columns have been used for the Proclamation of a new Sovereign. Elizabeth I named it the Royal Exchange in 1571.
